Sheridan Had Other Plans
Elliott told USA Today the same thing he tells people who ask why he is not working nonstop.
“I told Taylor that offers come in, but that he really spoiled me with 1883,” Elliott explained. “That I was having a nice time at home.”
That should have been the end of it. But Taylor Sheridan is not known for accepting polite refusals. He is known for pushing through walls.
Sheridan already had Billy Bob Thornton cast as Tommy Norris, the lead navigating the dangerous high pressure world of West Texas oil fields. Thornton and Elliott built unforgettable chemistry on 1883, and Sheridan knew it. He also knew he wanted that magic again.
So he surprised Elliott with a role written specifically for him. The father of Thornton’s character.
According to Elliott, Sheridan fired off a blunt response.
“And Taylor wrote back, saying, ‘I’m going to get your a** back to work,'” Elliott recalled. “That was his comment. I didn’t know what he was talking about.”
That was all Sheridan needed to say.
A Hollywood Deal Made the Cowboy Way
There were no boardrooms. No auditions. No weeks of negotiations.
Just a straight shooting message from Sheridan outlining exactly what was going to happen.
“Taylor told me, ‘Buddy, I’m not going without you,'” Elliott said. “It was the greatest gift.”
This is why actors love working with Sheridan. He does not act like a Hollywood executive. He acts like a ranch boss who knows what he wants and refuses to let anyone else define his vision.
Filling a Massive Hole in One of TV’s Hottest Shows
Landman is already a breakout hit for Paramount Plus. The show pulls viewers deep into the gritty world of the oil business where massive fortunes are won and lost in a single decision. It is a world built on American energy, American work ethic, and American risk, which naturally explains why Hollywood usually ignores it.
After the shocking death of Jon Hamm’s character Monty Miller in Season 1, the show needed a heavyweight. Sheridan knew Elliott was the only man who could step in without the audience missing a beat.
The cast already includes Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Ali Larter, and Andy Garcia. Adding Elliott takes the show to another level.
Elliott and Thornton as father and son is a pairing that fans of 1883 already know delivers gold.
The Cowboy Rides Again
Sam Elliott could have stayed home. He could have put his feet up and enjoyed a well deserved rest.
Instead, he is joining one of the most talked about shows on television because Taylor Sheridan refused to let a legend sit on the bench.
The new season of Landman premieres on Paramount Plus this Sunday, November 16. Fans now have another reason to tune in.
Thanks to one determined message from Taylor Sheridan, Sam Elliott is back in the saddle. And Hollywood is speechless.
