Authorities told the New York Post that there were no signs of foul play, and early indications suggested he died of natural causes. A longtime friend, Stephen Villano, said the actor appeared to have passed peacefully.
“He went to sleep and didn’t wake up.”
The news came as a surprise to many who knew Pastore. Although he had successfully battled prostate cancer after being diagnosed in 2014, those close to him said he had recently been doing well. Friends noted that he had celebrated his 80th birthday on July 14 surrounded by loved ones and had recently completed a routine medical examination.
His longtime manager, Robert Attermann, reflected on both Pastore’s career and his personal character in an emotional tribute.
“I had the privilege of representing Vinny for more than 30 years, long before The Sopranos made him a household name. To the world, he will always be remembered as the unforgettable ‘Big Pussy,’ but to those of us who knew him, he was so much more.”
Attermann went on to praise the actor’s generosity and genuine appreciation for the people around him.
“Vinny was one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever known. He treated everyone with warmth and respect, never turning down a fan who wanted a photograph or an autograph. He genuinely appreciated the people who supported him and always made them feel valued. He loved being an actor. He was passionate about his craft and was always encouraging, respectful, and generous with young actors, taking the time to offer guidance and support whenever he could.”
He concluded with a heartfelt reflection on losing someone who had been part of his life for decades.
“For me, losing Vinny is deeply personal. Over more than three decades, I had the honor of watching not only his remarkable career but also the incredible person he was. I will miss his friendship, his loyalty, his humor, and his heart.”
Born on July 14, 1946, in the Bronx, New York, Pastore grew up in nearby New Rochelle before serving in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. After completing his military service, he studied acting at Pace University, though his path to Hollywood was anything but conventional.
Before stepping into the entertainment industry full time, Pastore spent roughly two decades operating nightclubs throughout the New York area. It wasn’t until his early forties that he seriously pursued acting, eventually carving out a successful career built on authenticity and unmistakable screen presence.
His early film appearances included supporting roles in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas and Brian De Palma’s Carlito’s Way. He also portrayed real-life Gambino crime family figure Angelo Ruggiero in HBO’s Gotti, further establishing himself as a go-to actor for mob dramas.
Everything changed in 1999 when HBO debuted The Sopranos.
Pastore’s performance as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero quickly became one of the defining elements of the critically acclaimed series. Playing one of Tony Soprano’s oldest friends and closest associates, Pastore delivered one of the show’s most memorable storylines, appearing in 30 episodes alongside James Gandolfini.
Even after The Sopranos concluded, Pastore never slowed down.
He remained active in entertainment through radio, television, film, and live appearances. Fans heard him on SiriusXM as host of The Wiseguy Show, while others watched him compete on reality television programs including Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars.
His acting career also continued with appearances in productions such as The Birthday Cake, Gravesend, The Curse, and a voice role in Yellowjackets.
Away from television and film, Pastore frequently reunited with fellow Sopranos cast members during live touring events celebrating the iconic series. He also performed with his rock group, the Gangster Squad, and remained active in charitable work throughout the Bronx, supporting veterans, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and numerous community organizations.
As news of his passing spread, fellow cast members shared heartfelt memories of the actor.

“Our beloved friend and collaborator VINCENT PASTORE has passed away. This is a hard one for us, it seems like I’ve known Vinny forever. We did lots of work together and traveled all over the USA as well as Italy and Australia. Lots of good times. Lots of laughs. Vinny was a kind-hearted brother who cared deeply about his family and friends. I will miss him always.”
Lorraine Bracco also honored her longtime co-star, writing:
“such a funny & charming man… just a beautiful soul. Absolutely heartbreaking.”
Edie Falco echoed those sentiments, saying:
“It’s an awful loss. So unexpected. Vinnie was always so full of life.”
While Vincent Pastore will forever be remembered for bringing “Big Pussy” to life on one of television’s greatest dramas, those who worked alongside him say his greatest legacy was not the character he played, but the kindness, humility, and generosity he showed to everyone he met.
