Marco Rubio has delivered a blunt public rebuke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, challenging his account of Washington’s position on security guarantees and territorial concessions in the war with Russia.
The secretary of state’s response centered on one crucial distinction: whether the United States is demanding that Ukraine surrender territory in exchange for future security protections, or whether those protections would only take effect after the fighting ends.
According to Rubio, Zelensky’s public description of the American position was wrong.
The dispute raises important questions about the Trump administration’s diplomatic strategy, the future of Western involvement in Ukraine, and the risks of making security commitments that could pull the United States deeper into a prolonged conflict with a nuclear-armed Russia.
