A newly resurfaced social media controversy is creating major headaches for Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner after comments he made years ago about a wounded combat veteran came back into the spotlight.
The controversy centers on Purple Heart recipient Teddy Daniels, a decorated Army veteran who survived a deadly Taliban attack while serving in Afghanistan. Daniels’ actions during combat earned him national recognition, but one online comment made by Platner years later has sparked outrage among veterans and military supporters across the country.
The remarks originated from a Reddit account linked to Platner that was active before he launched his campaign for the United States Senate. The account commented on a widely viewed combat video showing Daniels under enemy fire during a 2012 deployment.
Daniels was struck multiple times during the engagement while protecting fellow soldiers.
According to archived records, Platner responded to the footage by calling Daniels a “dumb motherf—er” and claiming that “poor marksmanship on the Taliban’s part” was the reason he survived.
Although the post was later removed, internet archives preserved the comments.
