South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace reported being assaulted by a “pro-trans man” on Capitol grounds Tuesday evening. The incident, which Mace shared on her social media accounts, resulted in an injury to her arm that required a brace and ice for recovery. Capitol Police confirmed the arrest of a suspect for “assaulting a government official,” sparking intense debate about ongoing tensions surrounding gender policies in Congress.
The confrontation comes weeks after Mace championed a policy restricting access to women’s restrooms, locker rooms, and other single-sex facilities in the Capitol complex to individuals of the same biological sex. This policy, implemented under the leadership of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), followed the election of Democrat transgender representative Tim “Sarah” McBride to the House.
Get rid of [painful inflammation] today…thank me later?
Johnson announced the policy on November 20, stating:
“All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex. It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol. Women deserve women’s only spaces.”
