Colbert denied Americans share any obsession with royals. That is when Harry crossed the line.
“Really? I heard you elected a king,” he fired back.³
The audience immediately booed at the mention of Trump, but Colbert defended Harry, encouraging the joke. Sensing approval from the studio crowd, Harry doubled down, sneering about the American Revolution and mocking Americans for “making such a big deal about my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather George III.”⁴
Harry didn’t stop there. Taking a jab at CBS and the Trump lawsuit the network settled, he joked he would “settle a baseless lawsuit with the White House — all the things you people on TV do.”⁵
Harry Pokes the Bear While His Future in America Is on the Line
Few public figures take criticism more seriously than Donald Trump, and Harry knows it. Trump has warned repeatedly that Harry’s behavior and past attacks on the royal family have consequences.
“I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me,” Trump said in a 2024 interview.⁶
The former president has long questioned why the Biden administration allowed Harry to remain in the United States despite publicly admitting drug use in Spare, including cocaine and psychedelic mushrooms — admissions that normally disqualify foreign nationals.⁷
When pressed last year about whether Harry should stay in America, Trump said, “We’ll have to see if they know something about the drugs, and if he lied, they’ll have to take appropriate action.”⁸ Asked if that meant Harry could be removed, Trump added: “Oh I don’t know. You’ll have to tell me.”⁹
Immigration Battle Reopens — With Trump Now in Charge
The Heritage Foundation spent over a year trying to force the release of Harry’s immigration documents under Biden. A judge originally ruled the records should stay private, claiming the public had limited interest.¹⁰
But with Trump back in office, the legal fight is alive again. The case returns to court on February 5, this time under a president who has openly questioned Harry’s behavior and credibility.¹¹
Heritage’s Nile Gardiner has already urged the administration to intervene, saying, “I’ll be urging the president to release Prince Harry’s immigration records and the president does have that legal authority to do that.”¹²
Judge Carl J. Nichols even signaled he is “likely” to make Harry’s records public, insisting they should be revealed “to the maximum extent possible.”¹³
Harry Just Handed Trump Exactly What He Needed
The rift between the Sussexes and Trump is years old. Meghan backed a Michelle Obama voter initiative in 2020, Harry lectured Americans about “hate speech” that same year, and Trump responded sharply: “I’m not a fan of hers. I wish a lot of luck to Harry, he’s going to need it.”¹⁶
Meghan called Trump “divisive” and “misogynistic” in 2016, prompting Trump to label her “nasty.”¹⁷
Meanwhile, Trump has publicly praised Prince William as a “remarkable son,” purposely excluding Harry during his 2025 state visit.¹⁸ No subtlety there.
Immigration experts say the stakes are serious. One attorney told Newsweek: “Prince Harry’s visa application would likely have been denied had he admitted using cocaine, mushrooms, or other drugs recreationally because drug use is a grounds for inadmissibility.”¹⁹
Now, in the same week his case moves forward in a courtroom overseen by a Trump-appointed judge, Harry decides to joke that America “elected a king.”
That wasn’t comedy. It was political self-destruction.
And Trump — who now has full authority to review Harry’s immigration status — is unlikely to let this one slide.
After this stunt, Harry should expect zero mercy.
