In an interview with Christianity Today, Pence described the moment as cordial and reflective, marking a rare public acknowledgment of Trump’s electoral triumph.

Speaking about the encounter, Pence recounted the exchange with precision.
“He greeted me when he came down the aisle,” Pence stated. “I stood up, extended my hand. He shook my hand.”

The former vice president then congratulated Trump, saying, “Congratulations, Mr. President,” to which Trump simply responded, “Thanks, Mike.”
Despite their turbulent history, Pence expressed gratitude for the opportunity to interact with Trump and the symbolic nature of their handshake. “I’ve really been blessed at how much I’ve heard from people around the country who saw [our] handshake, and in that handshake, saw some hope that we might be moving past those difficult days,” he said, adding, “That’s certainly my hope.”
