California’s water policies are once again in the spotlight, as critics point to decades of mismanagement driven by the state’s efforts to protect the Delta Smelt—a tiny fish species that hasn’t been seen in the wild in over a decade. Despite these efforts, many communities are facing devastating consequences, including water shortages and burnt-out cities.

Delta Smelt: The Unseen Species

The Delta Smelt, once considered a key indicator of the health of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta ecosystem, has not been observed in the wild since 2012, according to a 2021 report by Dan Bacher in the Sacramento News. For seven consecutive Septembers, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has conducted surveys in hopes of finding the elusive fish. The results? Zero sightings.

In fact, the last recorded instance of Delta Smelt in the wild was during the CDFW’s Fall Midwater Trawl Survey in 2015, when just five fish were caught. A year later, only eight were reported over a four-month period. Since then, the species has vanished entirely from state surveys, leading many to label the fish functionally extinct.
