Harry Reportedly Looks Toward Diana’s Inner Circle
According to reports, Harry has been exploring the possibility of producing a documentary timed around the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death.
The project is reportedly still in development, meaning many of the details could change before anything is officially announced. However, Harry is said to have approached people who knew his mother, including her brother.
That would put Earl Spencer in an especially interesting position.
Spencer is already at the center of the latest royal controversy because of his memoir. Reuters reported that he described writing the book as a duty to record what he believes is a truthful account of his sister’s life before the anniversary year.
Harry’s production company, Archewell Productions, would reportedly be a natural vehicle for the project because of its existing relationship with Netflix.
If the documentary moves forward, the story could potentially combine Harry’s memories of his mother with interviews from people who knew Diana personally.
Meghan Markle has also reportedly been involved in shaping the project’s direction and could potentially narrate it.
For Buckingham Palace, that possibility would represent another chapter in an increasingly public family dispute.
The Palace has generally attempted to avoid prolonged public exchanges with Harry and Meghan. A major Netflix production centered on Diana, however, could once again put the family’s private history before millions of viewers.
Spencer’s Memoir Has Already Reopened Old Wounds
The timing is difficult to ignore.
Spencer’s newly released memoir has brought the circumstances surrounding Diana’s final years and death back into the headlines nearly three decades later.
Among the most controversial claims is Spencer’s account of a conversation with the then-Prince Charles following Diana’s death.
Spencer says Charles reacted to concerns about William and Harry walking behind their mother’s coffin by saying, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough!”
Buckingham Palace has disputed the recollection.
In a rare response, the Palace emphasized that grief can influence a person’s recollection of events. Reuters reported that the Palace said the pain of fraternal grief can “cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory.”
Spencer has pushed back against that suggestion.
He has maintained that the words attributed to Charles were accurately remembered and said he wrote the book as an eyewitness to events surrounding his sister.
The memoir also contains other striking claims about Diana’s marriage, including Spencer’s account of her doubts before the 1981 wedding and her description of problems within the relationship. Reuters noted that Spencer himself acknowledged that some interpretations of Charles’s private thoughts were ultimately impossible for him to know with certainty.
The result has been another round of headlines involving a royal family that has spent decades trying to move beyond the trauma of the 1990s.
William Chooses Silence
Prince William has so far offered little publicly in response to his uncle’s revelations.
On September 22, William was asked by reporters about Spencer’s book while attending an event in London.
A reporter called out, “Sir, how do you feel about your uncle’s book?”
William did not respond.
He continued into the event rather than engaging with questions about the memoir.
That silence is significant because the book deals directly with the history of William’s parents and the traumatic period surrounding his mother’s death.
Spencer also did not reportedly give William, Harry or Buckingham Palace advance notice of everything contained in the memoir.
The development is particularly notable given Spencer’s relationship with Harry. The Duke of Sussex has remained in contact with his maternal uncle, including a visit during the summer.
Yet the brothers reportedly learned what Spencer had written through the same public disclosures that reached everyone else.

In December 2022, Harry and Meghan released their Netflix series Harry & Meghan, which revisited their relationship with the monarchy and their decision to step away from royal duties.

Harry later went even further with his memoir, Spare, which contained additional revelations about his relationship with William, King Charles and other members of the royal family.
That history makes a potential Diana documentary particularly noteworthy.
Harry would not simply be producing another account of his childhood. He would potentially be returning to the defining tragedy of his family’s history while approaching the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death.
And this time, he could have his uncle’s newly published memoir as part of the surrounding conversation.
