When Donald Trump announced the creation of the Space Force during his first term, the proposal immediately became a political punchline for many of its critics.
Today, the Space Force is an established military service responsible for organizing and operating U.S. space capabilities, including satellites and other systems essential to communications, navigation and national security. It became the first new branch of the U.S. military in more than seven decades after Congress authorized it in 2019. Its commander also serves on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Now Trump is invoking that same model as he prepares to launch a new initiative focused on artificial intelligence.
The president announced Sept. 19 that his administration would establish what he called an “AI Force” and that he would name a new AI “Czar.” However, the announcement provided few details about the proposed organization, including its precise mission, budget, location within the federal government or whether it would ultimately have a military structure.
