Parton’s star had effectively turned into a public memorial following news of her death.
Fans placed flowers, handwritten messages, cards, candles, and other tributes around the landmark as they traveled to Hollywood to say goodbye.
But the memorial was temporarily cleared as workers prepared to perform maintenance on the star.
Ana Martinez of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said repairs had already been planned because the star had existing cracks.
The Hollywood Historic Trust, which handles maintenance of the Walk of Fame stars, removed the items surrounding Parton’s star ahead of that work.
Then came the apparent vandalism.
A woman identified as Lore Corona said she arrived at the site Monday with her daughters intending to place flowers there.
Instead, she discovered that someone had badly scratched Parton’s name.
Corona recorded the damage and shared video of what she encountered on social media.
“Somebody decided to do this about 10 minutes before we got here,” the woman said on her video, which shows the damaged star, which appeared to have Parton’s name extensively scratched. “It just doesn’t make any sense.”
The timing made the scene particularly jarring.
What had been a place for grieving fans to celebrate Parton’s life suddenly became the site of an apparent act of destruction.
Corona also relayed what she said she learned from a custodian who was at the scene.
According to her account, the custodian said another woman had begun kicking candles that mourners had previously placed around the memorial.
The woman allegedly broke one of the candles and then used a piece of it to scratch Parton’s star.
The circumstances described by Corona quickly fueled outrage among Parton’s supporters.
For many fans, the obvious question was simple: Why?
Whatever motivated the person responsible, damaging a memorial dedicated to a recently deceased entertainer is difficult to understand.
And Parton was hardly an obscure or deeply polarizing celebrity.
Over her extraordinary career, the Tennessee-born singer became one of country music’s most recognizable stars, building a catalog filled with songs that crossed cultural and generational boundaries.
Her public reputation also stretched far beyond Nashville.

That reputation made the apparent attack on her star even more bewildering to mourners.
Hollywood has no shortage of political fights and celebrity controversies.

Fans did not need to share her background, politics, or taste in music to appreciate what she represented.
That is precisely why people were leaving flowers on Hollywood Boulevard.
They were not gathering for a political demonstration.
They were mourning an American entertainer whose career had touched millions of lives.
Yet even that simple memorial apparently could not escape vandalism.
The good news is that the damage should not remain permanent.
Parton’s star was already slated for repair before the incident because of the previously existing cracks, and work on the landmark was reportedly underway Tuesday.
But repairing the physical star does not erase what happened.
For the fans who arrived expecting a quiet opportunity to honor Parton, the scratched name served as another reminder of how quickly even a public memorial can become a target.
The incident also stands in stark contrast to the extraordinary outpouring of affection surrounding Parton following her death.
Flowers can be removed.
Candles can be broken.
A Hollywood star can be scratched.
But decades of music and memories are considerably harder to destroy.
And judging from the reaction of the fans who continued showing up to honor Dolly Parton, one senseless act of vandalism is unlikely to diminish the legacy she left behind.
