According to The Daily Mail:
Steve Cohen, a Democrat from Tennessee, is upset because during the Super Bowl performance, “very few” people stood for the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
Congressman Steve Cohen, a Democrat, criticized the Super Bowl audience for not standing for the “Lift Every Voice and Sing” rendition of the Black National Anthem.
Following the game, he went to X and said: ‘Very very few stood at Super Bowl for “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. The Negro National Anthem. Not a pretty picture of Super Bowl crowd.’
The song, which was sung by Grammy winner Andra Day this year, has been played during the previous four Super Bowls.
Day’s song brought applause, although many in the audience stayed sitting as she performed.
Cohen subsequently stated: ‘I honor our national anthem and respect it as representing our country and in our pride in it. However if you look at the history and some of the verbiage, it does relate to slavery and not in a questioning manner.’
