Biddeford police first announced the closure of Pool Street at approximately 8:15 a.m., warning motorists to avoid the area while investigators conducted their work.
Biddeford Police Chief JoAnn Fisk emphasized that her department is not leading the investigation. Instead, local officers are assisting federal and state authorities as they gather evidence and interview witnesses.
Fisk said Biddeford police will not be releasing additional information and directed all questions to the FBI and the Maine Attorney General’s Office, which are expected to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau also acknowledged the incident Monday morning, confirming that one person died and that ICE personnel were involved in the confrontation.
“A person was killed. ICE was involved. State Police and the Department of Public Safety are now on scene to gather details and would expect the FBI to investigate as well. These are the details that I have at this time. I will provide further updates, as they are relayed to me.”
At this stage, officials have not identified the individual who was killed or disclosed whether the deceased was the driver involved in the reported vehicle incident. Authorities also have not officially stated which law enforcement officer fired the fatal shots.
Residents living near the scene described a chaotic morning as the investigation unfolded. One neighbor told local media she was awakened around 8 a.m. by multiple gunshots before noticing a large police presence pouring into the neighborhood. Emergency vehicles soon filled nearby streets as officers secured the area and prevented public access while investigators began collecting evidence.
The significant response underscored the seriousness of the incident, with federal, state, and local agencies coordinating efforts to reconstruct the sequence of events. Investigators remained on scene for several hours, carefully documenting physical evidence before reopening portions of the area.
Fatal encounters involving federal immigration officers routinely trigger independent reviews involving multiple agencies. In this case, both the FBI and the Maine Attorney General’s Office are expected to examine the facts surrounding the shooting, including the actions of everyone involved and the circumstances leading up to the use of deadly force.
For now, many key questions remain unanswered. Authorities have yet to explain why ICE agents were present in Biddeford, whether they were conducting an enforcement operation, or what events led to the reported confrontation. Officials also have not confirmed whether anyone else was injured during the incident.
As investigators continue interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence from the scene, federal officials are expected to release additional information in the coming days. Until then, the deadly encounter remains under active investigation, with authorities urging the public to wait for verified facts as they work to determine exactly what happened during Monday morning’s fatal confrontation.
