Jim Messina and David Plouffe aren’t outside critics throwing stones—they’re the architects behind the Democratic Party’s last two successful presidential campaigns.
Now, both men are raising serious concerns about the party’s future.
Messina laid it out in stark terms, acknowledging that Democratic electoral success in the near term may hinge almost entirely on opposition to Trump—not on any affirmative message.
“The midterms are going to be 85-90% driven by voter opposition to Trump and maybe 10-15% based on what Dems stand for,” he said. “We cannot rely on that same calculation to win in 2028.”
That’s not a strategy—it’s a temporary crutch.
