California’s classrooms were once anchored by seasoned educators—men and women who spent decades shaping young minds and instilling discipline. That era, according to a growing number of veteran teachers, is rapidly fading. Across the state, experienced educators are walking away from the profession in alarming numbers, and many say the system itself is to blame.
In interviews with Fox News Digital, six longtime California teachers painted a troubling picture of what is happening behind the scenes. Their message was consistent: the traditional authority of teachers has been steadily dismantled, leaving chaos in its place.
A major flashpoint in this shift has been the widespread adoption of so-called “restorative justice” discipline policies. Once marketed as a compassionate alternative to traditional punishment, critics now argue these policies have eroded classroom order. Under this framework, teachers often lack the authority to impose meaningful consequences when students disrupt learning environments.
The numbers underscore the concern. Estimates suggest that roughly 45% of California teachers plan to retire or leave the profession within the next decade, compared to about 36% nationwide. That gap signals a deepening crisis in the nation’s largest state education system.
