Barack Obama might be “retired,” but he’s still diving into politics whenever it suits him. This week, the former President jumped into one of the most brazen election schemes California has ever seen.
At a fundraiser in Martha’s Vineyard – where else would the Democrat elite gather – Obama endorsed Governor Gavin Newsom’s plan to tear apart California’s independent redistricting commission. This commission was designed to keep elections fair and stop politicians from drawing districts to protect their own power.
“I believe that Gov. Newsom’s approach is a responsible approach. He said this is going to be responsible. We’re not going to try to completely maximize it,” Obama told donors, according to The Associated Press.
Newsom is now pushing for a special election this year to convince voters to undo the state’s constitutional amendments that created the commission in the first place. Without heavy political cover, this move looks like exactly what it is – a shameless power grab.
