After two decades of rumors, rewrites, and restarts, Mel Gibson has finally done it. Cameras are rolling on The Resurrection of the Christ, the long-awaited follow-up to his 2004 megahit The Passion of the Christ. But while fans expected Gibson to resurrect the same faces and formula that made his original film a global phenomenon, he’s instead made a radical move that’s turning heads across Hollywood.

A 20-Year Struggle Finally Ends
Gibson’s journey to bring the sequel to life has been a marathon of persistence. Production officially began last week at Rome’s legendary Cinecittà Studios—marking the end of what’s been called one of the longest development stories in film history.
Back in 2016, screenwriter Randall Wallace announced he was working with Gibson on the script, but progress was slow. In fact, Gibson admitted during a panel at Fan Expo Philadelphia that the script alone took nearly a decade.
“It took me about eight years to write the script for the sequel, if we can call that The Resurrection of Christ, because it’s a very complex and almost impossible to understand subject,” Gibson said.
The director went on to describe his screenplay as “an acid trip,” adding, “I never read anything like” it.
