In a public statement, family members said they are “deeply affected by the tragic events surrounding the passing of Johan and Mathilda from Meerstad” and “can hardly comprehend” what happened. Dutch police have confirmed that a minor remains in custody in connection with the deaths. Because the suspect is under the age of 18, authorities have released only limited information about the case while the criminal investigation continues.
