A prominent Democratic power broker just delivered a blunt reality check about California Governor Gavin Newsom and his 2028 ambitions. And this time, the warning didn’t come from a Republican strategist or a conservative think tank. It came from inside the party’s own donor class.

For months, Newsom has been methodically positioning himself as the heir to the Democratic throne. He has ramped up his national media appearances, adopted an aggressive social media presence, and staged international trips that look more like presidential auditions than routine gubernatorial business. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has openly praised him as the future of the party.
But one of the Democrats’ biggest financial backers just threw cold water on that narrative.
Florida legal titan John Morgan, founder of the powerhouse firm Morgan & Morgan and a longtime Democratic donor who has written massive checks to candidates including Barack Obama, went on NewsNation with Chris Cuomo and did something few in the party are willing to do publicly. He told the truth about Newsom’s political problem.
“Here’s his problem,” Morgan said flatly. “He decided to be the Democratic version of Donald Trump.”
That line alone should set off alarms inside Democratic circles.
