California Governor Gavin Newsom has stepped into the redistricting battle with a direct threat aimed at President Donald Trump, warning he will retaliate against Texas Republicans if they move forward with their new congressional maps.
“If you will not stand down, I will be forced to lead an effort to redraw the maps in California to offset the rigging of maps in red states,” Newsom wrote in a letter to Trump on Monday.
The drama erupted after Texas Republicans unveiled plans to redraw congressional districts in a way that could eliminate up to five Democrat-held seats. Supporters of the plan say it’s about time — pointing out that deep-blue states like California have been gerrymandering for years to squeeze out GOP representation.
The Texas move triggered a predictable stunt from Democrats in the state legislature. Rather than show up and vote, dozens of them fled the chamber entirely, preventing the GOP majority from having enough members present to pass the measure.
