California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has announced a special legislative session aimed at pushing back against President Trump’s policies following his recent landslide election victory over Kamala Harris. Newsom, backed by other state leaders, asserts that the incoming Trump administration poses a direct threat to California’s climate initiatives, immigrant protections, and civil rights. The session is set to convene on December 2 and will focus on strengthening legal protections for California’s policies and values.
Governor Newsom made his intentions clear, declaring, “California is ready to fight.” He emphasized that the state would not stand by as federal policies potentially threaten core Californian principles. “I just called an emergency special session to help bolster our legal resources and protect our state against any unlawful actions by the incoming Trump Administration,” Newsom stated. This session aims to safeguard California’s stance on environmental protections, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ+ rights, as Newsom seeks to prevent what he calls an attempt to “turn back the clock” on progressive gains.

In addition to Governor Newsom’s call to action, his office provided further context on the urgency of this special session. Newsom’s administration released a statement noting that the session directly responds to Trump’s public statements and policy proposals, as well as actions taken during his first term in office. “The special session responds to the public statements and proposals put forward by President-elect Trump and his advisors, and actions taken during his first term in office — an agenda that could erode essential freedoms and individual rights, including women’s rights and LGBTQ+ rights,” his office said. The special session, they added, would enable rapid legislative action to uphold California’s policies from federal interference.
