Authorities in South Carolina have raised an urgent alert following the escape of more than 40 rhesus macaque monkeys from a research facility in Beaufort County. The primates broke free from the Alpha Genesis research center in Yemassee late Wednesday, triggering a countywide response from local law enforcement and Alpha Genesis staff as they work tirelessly to bring the animals back.
These young monkeys, weighing between six and seven pounds, escaped their enclosures and are now loose in the surrounding area. In response, the Yemassee Police Department has issued an advisory urging residents to secure their homes by locking doors and windows, citing the likelihood that the skittish animals could wander into neighborhoods and interact with residents.

Local police, joined by Alpha Genesis personnel, are using various methods to safely recover the animals, deploying traps, food-based lures, and thermal imaging to locate the loose primates. Authorities warned that the monkeys might be spooked by loud noises or sudden movements, which could make it harder for the capture teams to succeed. Residents are asked to report any sightings by calling 911 immediately but are warned not to approach the animals under any circumstances.
