New Evidence: Potential Military Conflict

The Wagner Group was established by Dmitry Utkin and Yevgeny Prigozhin and is made up mostly of former Russian military personnel. In the struggle between President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine, this organization has been a prominent player. However, there have been rumors of the Wagner Group’s collapse after a recent attempted revolt, which may have been caused by internal disputes with military commanders. However, a European satellite image raises the possibility that the organization is developing a secret site in Belarus.

According to BBC News, Prigozhin started a brief mutiny on June 24 after the Russian military blasted his Ukrainian-based forces. When Prigozhin refused to sign a contract that would have placed the mercenary organization formally under Kremlin authority, internal conflicts may have reached a boiling point. The mercenary boss has openly blasted Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s military minister, alleging “incompetence.” The Wagner Group’s objective, according to Prigozhin’s video message on June 26, was to register its objection, not “to overthrow the government in the country,” according to The New York Times. He sought to keep Wagner’s soldiers out of bad military command and damaging commands.

After successfully capturing Rostov-on-Don, the Wagner Group intended to march toward Moscow and overthrow its military authorities. The approach was stopped when the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, intervened and offered to mediate talks between Prigozhin and Putin. NBC News first said that the rebel had likely been imprisoned by Russian authorities, but more recent information indicates that Prigozhin was permitted to leave Russia and seek asylum in Belarus. Additionally, Putin’s army absorbed the remaining forces while giving loyal soldiers the option to go to Belarus. The Russian government dismissed all criminal charges as part of the agreed accord.

Although there are reports that Prigozhin’s forces, who are currently under official Russian command, are continuing in action, nothing is known about their future. Recent satellite photographs from Belarus show construction activity being done by Putin’s new exiles. The key question is whether they are assisting Russian operations or advancing their own objectives with the base they are constructing.
