A senior figure long embedded in the federal government’s pandemic response is now at the center of a criminal case that could reignite one of the most contentious debates in modern public health.
David M. Morens, a veteran adviser who worked closely with Anthony Fauci, has been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice on multiple federal charges tied to his conduct during the COVID-19 crisis. The case, unsealed Tuesday, accuses the longtime government insider of deliberately sidestepping transparency laws at the height of the pandemic.
Prosecutors allege that Morens relied on private email accounts rather than official government systems in order to shield key conversations from public scrutiny. According to the indictment, this was not an isolated lapse in judgment but part of a broader pattern aimed at avoiding disclosure requirements under the Freedom of Information Act.
At the heart of the case is a controversial research grant connected to China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology. That grant drew intense scrutiny as questions grew about whether COVID-19 may have originated from a laboratory. Federal prosecutors claim Morens participated in efforts to keep sensitive discussions about that research off the record, using unofficial communication channels to prevent those exchanges from becoming public.
