Elon Musk expressed his criticism of President Joe Biden’s prisoner exchange plan on Twitter early on Friday. The internet tycoon said that leaving out veteran US Marine Paul Whelan was unfair and urged the president to change his mind.
On Thursday, the U.S. government finalized an unusual deal: WNBA star Brittney Griner was freed from a Russian penal colony, ending her two-year detention and captivity overseas, in exchange for renowned international weapons dealer Viktor Bout, widely known as “the Merchant of Death.”

Due to Russia’s unwillingness to carry out the conditions of a recent agreement, criticism has been leveled at it for keeping Paul Whelan in custody. Mr. Whelan is still held captive despite a deal that should have guaranteed his release, and the world community is holding Russia accountable for this breach of morality.

Elon Musk responded by sharing some of his ideas on Twitter. “Never leave a marine behind. Never.”
Olympic athlete and professional high jumper Griner was stopped in February at a Russian airport when officials discovered vape cartridges with cannabis oil in her hands. She was given an unusual nine-year term in August after pleading guilty to narcotics smuggling charges.
According to reports, former president Donald Trump rejected a deal to swap Whelan, the American jailed in 2018, for Bout, a known weapons dealer. John Bolton, who was acting as national security adviser at the time, said this.
“The possibility of a Bout-for-Whelan trade existed back then,” Bolton said that “It wasn’t made, for very good reasons having to deal with Viktor Bout.”
In a video uploaded to Twitter on Thursday, Barstool Sports President Dave Portnoy expressed his belief that by dealing Bout for Griner, current President Joe Biden had received the raw deal. After seeing how this transaction played out, it seems like President Biden was severely outsmarted and didn’t exactly receive what he was hoping for!
“This trade feels like a PR stunt,” Portnoy questioned if Whelan’s imprisonment may have been avoided if more people in the illustrious society had openly spoken in his favor.
