Authorities allege Arrabaca then poured gasoline near an employee entrance used by federal personnel before igniting it with a lighter. Officials say he also detonated a firework inside a canister and discharged several rounds from an airsoft rifle toward the building before security personnel intervened.
The confrontation ended only after a security officer tackled the suspect to the ground before the situation escalated further. Federal authorities said the responding officer and a nearby bystander suffered minor injuries related to the explosion, but no fatalities were reported.
Investigators believe the suspect intended to do far more damage.
FBI Assistant Director James Barnacle told reporters Arrabaca “came armed with bad intentions, looking to injure people and harm people.”
Fox News later reported that Barnacle also described the suspect as “an anti-American, anti-government extremist.”
Federal investigators moved quickly after the incident. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the arrest just hours later, announcing that an individual had deployed an incendiary device outside the federal facility before being taken into custody.
Public records cited by Fox News indicate Arrabaca was registered as a Democrat and had also been affiliated with the Working Families Party, a progressive political organization. Those details immediately fueled debate among conservative commentators, many of whom argued that the suspect’s political affiliations deserved greater scrutiny.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the incident in a public statement, calling it “deeply disturbing” while pledging cooperation with the ongoing federal investigation.
That response, however, drew criticism from conservative voices who argued the mayor failed to specifically denounce anti-ICE extremism or address the increasingly hostile rhetoric directed toward federal immigration officers.
Video recorded outside the building showed heavily armed ICE and Department of Homeland Security personnel rushing from the facility as dark smoke rose near the entrance. The dramatic footage spread rapidly online and contrasted sharply with what critics viewed as more restrained reporting from several national news outlets.
Much of the backlash centered on the headlines used by NBC News and CBS News during the initial hours following the attack.
Gateway Pundit highlighted a widely circulated CBS segment that critics mocked with the phrase “fiery but mostly peaceful,” invoking comparisons to controversial media coverage during the nationwide riots of 2020.
NBC’s initial presentation also generated widespread criticism across conservative social media, where users accused the network of downplaying what authorities described as an attempted attack on federal personnel.
For many conservatives, the reporting reflected what they believe has become a recurring pattern whenever violence targets immigration enforcement officers.
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin has repeatedly argued that political rhetoric and sympathetic media coverage have contributed to a dangerous environment surrounding ICE operations. She has warned that repeated efforts to soften descriptions of attacks on immigration officers risk encouraging additional violence.
The department has also released statistics highlighting what officials describe as a dramatic increase in assaults against ICE personnel during President Donald Trump’s return to office.
According to DHS, assaults against ICE officers increased by 1,347 percent compared with the same period under the Biden administration. The department also reported that vehicular attacks rose by more than 3,200 percent, while death threats against ICE officers and their families climbed by approximately 8,000 percent.
Conservatives have increasingly pointed to rhetoric from Democratic officials as contributing to the heightened tensions.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz previously referred to ICE agents as “Trump’s modern-day Gestapo,” remarks that generated widespread criticism from Republicans who argued such comparisons unfairly demonize federal law enforcement officers.
Critics argue that repeated attacks on ICE personnel should be viewed through the same lens as assaults against any other federal officers, regardless of politics.
The latest incident has also revived comparisons to media coverage following the assassination attempt against President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. Conservative commentators argue that several national news organizations initially hesitated to characterize that shooting with the urgency it deserved, and they now see similar reporting patterns emerging following the New York attack.
Federal investigators continue to examine Arrabaca’s motives while reviewing evidence collected from the scene. Authorities have not suggested the investigation is complete, and additional details may emerge as the case proceeds.
For many conservatives, however, the larger controversy now extends beyond the criminal investigation itself. They argue that accurately describing politically motivated violence is essential regardless of who the intended victims are.
Whether directed at elected officials, presidential candidates, or federal immigration officers, they contend that attempted acts of violence should be reported with clarity rather than language that minimizes the seriousness of the alleged conduct.
