National Guard Attack Shuts Down Afghan Visas

In a swift response to a shocking attack in downtown Washington D.C., the State Department announced Wednesday that it is freezing all immigration cases from Afghanistan. The decision comes after a 29-year-old Afghan national deliberately shot two National Guard soldiers, leaving both critically wounded.

Late Wednesday night, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) confirmed it would halt all processing of Afghan nationals indefinitely. Thousands of Afghans have sought entry to the United States on immigration visas, citing either their work alongside coalition forces in Afghanistan or fear of persecution by the Taliban.

The FBI is treating the attack as an act of terrorism. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump ordered a full review of all Afghan nationals admitted to the U.S. since the disastrous Biden withdrawal in August 2021. Officials confirmed the shooter entered the country under Biden’s controversial “Operation Allies Welcome” program, which has repeatedly faced criticism for inadequate vetting procedures.
