A congressional hearing examining the direction of federally funded museums turned into a tense exchange when Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) questioned the director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History about gender identity and museum exhibits.
The hearing centered on how the Smithsonian presents topics related to American history and culture, including exhibits addressing gender identity and diversity initiatives. Mace argued that taxpayer-funded institutions should provide clear answers on issues she believes reflect common definitions and public expectations.
During her questioning, Mace displayed images of museum exhibits she said featured drag performers and asked Smithsonian National Museum of American History Director Anthea Hartig a direct question.
