Three San Francisco Giants pitchers are drawing attention — and now a formal warning from Major League Baseball — after choosing to display Bible verse references on their uniforms during the team’s Pride Night game at the Chicago Cubs’ stadium on Friday night.
The moment, which quickly spread across social media and sports commentary circles, centered on a quiet but visible expression of faith that stood in contrast to the league’s themed event.
San Francisco Giants pitcher Landen Roupp took the mound with “Gen 9:12-16” written next to the Giants logo on his special Pride Night cap. Fellow pitcher JT Brubaker also added “Genesis 9:13-15” to his hat, while reliever Ryan Walker included a similar biblical reference on his own gear. Another reliever, Sam Hentges, reportedly chose not to wear the Pride-themed cap at all.
The displays immediately sparked debate over whether players should be permitted to express personal religious beliefs in the context of a league-mandated themed night.
After the game, Roupp explained his decision in straightforward terms, emphasizing that his intention was rooted in personal conviction rather than protest.
