Mike Johnson Just Made It Official!

House Speaker Mike Johnson is signaling support for a dramatic shake-up in Louisiana’s election timeline after a major court decision threw the state’s congressional map into legal turmoil.

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling, Johnson made it clear that delaying upcoming House elections in Louisiana may not just be an option—it may be unavoidable. The decision comes as state officials scramble to respond to the court’s determination that the current district lines cannot stand.

Republican Governor Jeff Landry quickly acknowledged the severity of the situation, announcing that Louisiana cannot proceed with elections under the invalidated map. He emphasized that state leaders would move swiftly to craft a new district plan, though such changes could have serious political consequences. In particular, any redrawn map could put pressure on Democratic Representatives Troy Carter and Cleo Fields, both of whom currently represent majority-Black districts.

“The governor has no choice but to suspend it,” Johnson told reporters. “The court has ruled our map unconstitutional.”
