The Day the Suits Took Over Xbox
Microsoft’s CFO Amy Hood didn’t come from gaming — she came from finance. But in the fall of 2023, she decided she wanted a “larger role” in the Xbox division. What she actually did was destroy the culture that made Xbox great.
According to Bloomberg reporters Jason Schreier and Dina Bass, Hood demanded that Xbox hit a 30% profit margin, calling it an “accountability margin.” That number sounds good on a spreadsheet but is completely unrealistic in an industry that typically operates between 17% and 22%.¹
Xbox, in the real world, had hovered around 10% to 20%. Court filings even showed the company sitting at 12% for most of 2022.³ But that didn’t matter. Hood wanted more — nearly double what the industry had ever managed.
