Rumors surrounding the Obamas’ marriage continue to swirl—and now Michelle Obama is addressing the controversy head-on. The former First Lady is finally responding to growing speculation that her decades-long marriage to former President Barack Obama may be hitting troubled waters. And despite her attempts to shut down the gossip, some of her own public behavior—and even her words—are doing little to calm the chatter.
During a recent appearance on NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin, Michelle brushed off the rumors with a mix of sarcasm and frustration. “Even in this phase in our lives, when Barack and I say something right or wrong, it does get covered. You know, the fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage. I mean, it’s sort of…” she trailed off.
“It’s the apocalypse. It’s like, OK, so we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives. We are 60. We’re 60, y’all. We just, you just are not gonna know what we’re doing every minute of the day, you know?” Michelle added.
But for many Americans paying attention, that explanation didn’t quite settle things. That’s because Michelle has repeatedly been seen jet-setting and dining out without Barack by her side—a pattern that’s becoming hard to ignore.
