Just last week, Michelle was spotted vacationing in Mallorca, Spain, along with her daughters Malia and Sasha. Paparazzi caught the trio enjoying a posh lunch at the trendy Lobster Club in Puerto Portals. The Obama daughters looked summer-ready, while Michelle sported a colorful dress and hoops. Once again, Barack was nowhere to be seen—just as he’s been absent from numerous other public appearances with his wife in recent months.
Joining Michelle on the getaway were former U.S. ambassador to Spain James Costos and Michael Smith, the Obamas’ longtime friend and interior designer. The group was seen relaxing at a lavish Mediterranean seaside venue—complete with live music, luxurious views, and an infinity pool. But Barack’s absence was glaring.
It’s not the first time Barack has missed a big moment. From President Jimmy Carter’s funeral to President Donald Trump’s historic inauguration, Barack has skipped several major public events—without his wife or with her appearing solo.
Last month, Michelle attempted to push back on the narrative during an appearance on The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett. “That’s not who we are,” she said about the rumors. “And I know that about him. He knows that about me.” She also emphasized that after 32 years of marriage, neither of them would ever “quit.”
Still, Michelle herself seems to add fuel to the fire. In an eyebrow-raising moment on her podcast, IMO [In My Opinion], the former First Lady made a comment that many saw as suggestive of life without a spouse. While speaking with her brother Craig Robinson and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, she quipped: “You know, I have to say, Brian, if I’m a single girl out there and I find out that Brian Chesky is single and I could like stay in his house—”
Robinson jumped in quickly: “Here she goes, right to the relationship!” to which he added, “Brian, you don’t have to feel pressure.”
Chesky, for his part, laughed it off, saying, “Her and her husband have tried to set me up before.”
Michelle then chimed in again, admitting she’s “very invested in Brian’s love life,” to which Chesky replied that he “appreciated” it.
While that might have seemed playful on the surface, for many observers, the timing and tone of the remarks only deepened concerns about what’s really going on behind the scenes.
Further complicating the picture, Barack recently admitted that he’s in a “deep deficit with my wife.” According to him, he’s been trying to plan special activities to make up for it—yet Michelle hasn’t been shy about expressing her own frustrations, including his chronic lateness and habit of avoiding deeper conversations.
At the end of the day, the Obamas are presenting a picture of a marriage under strain—despite their best efforts to keep up appearances. And with Michelle stepping further into the spotlight without her husband, the questions are only getting louder.
For a couple that once captivated the country as a symbol of unity and modern love, this new chapter is raising some serious red flags.
