The assailant, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, set up on a rooftop about 130 yards from the rally. Crooks fired multiple rounds at Donald Trump before a countersniper took him down. Although Trump was grazed by a bullet, causing a minor injury to his ear, the attack claimed the life of Corey Comperatore, a former Pennsylvania fire chief, and injured two other rally attendees, David Dutch and James Copenhaven.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Melania Trump referred to the incident as a “miracle,” expressing gratitude that her husband’s life was spared. “How… like that much, and he could, you know, he could not be with us,” she said, reflecting on how narrowly her husband avoided death that day.
The nightmare didn’t end with the Pennsylvania rally. On September 15, while Donald Trump was playing golf at his club in West Palm Beach, Florida, another assassination attempt took place. Once again, Melania learned about the attack through television, this time while she was in New York.
“As soon as I saw it on television, I called again, and he was OK because Secret Service were great,” Melania said, praising the quick action of the security team. “The guys that they were, the team, they were fantastic.”

Melania went on to reflect on both assassination attempts, emphasizing how fortunate they were. “I think both of the events, they were really miracles,” she said. Her relief was evident, as she spoke about how close they came to losing him.
In the same interview, Melania revealed that she’s preparing to release a memoir, titled “Melania,” which she described as a deeply personal project. “Writing this memoir has been a deeply personal and reflective journey for me,” she stated in a promotional video posted to social media. After years of what she called “public scrutiny and misrepresentation,” Melania explained that the book would clarify many misconceptions about her.
“I believe it is important to share my perspective: the truth,” Melania said, stressing her desire to set the record straight.
According to Skyhorse Publishing, the memoir promises an “intimate portrait of a woman who has lived an extraordinary life,” offering stories and images never before revealed to the public. Set to be released on October 1, the book is expected to be a candid account of her experiences in the White House and beyond.

The impact of these assassination attempts was felt not only by Melania but also by their youngest son, Barron. In an interview with Mark Levin, Donald Trump shared the moment Barron learned of the first attempt on his father’s life. The former president recounted how Barron, in the middle of a tennis lesson, was suddenly informed that his father had been shot.
“He’s a good tennis player. And somebody ran up (and said), ‘Barron! Barron! Your father’s been shot,’” Trump recalled, adding that his son immediately rushed to find out more. “He loves his father. He’s a good kid, a good student.”
Trump also recalled Melania’s reaction to the incident. “When I could talk to people, I said, ‘So what was your feeling?’ And she said she can’t even talk about it, which is okay because that means she likes me,” he joked, trying to lighten the mood despite the seriousness of the situation.
During the interview, Trump also shared insights about the shooter’s apparent intent. He explained that his son, Donald Trump Jr., who is knowledgeable about firearms, found it shocking that the shooter missed, considering the distance. “From that distance, it’s supposed to be, like, a sure thing,” Trump explained, comparing it to “sinking a one-foot putt.”
Reflecting on the close call, Trump said, “If I turned around just a little bit less, or a little bit more… it was still the end.”
The assassination attempts on Donald Trump have left a lasting mark on both him and his family, but through it all, Melania Trump maintains a sense of gratitude for their survival. As she prepares for the release of her memoir, she hopes to shed light on these events and provide a clearer view of her life during and after her time as First Lady.
