After several days of standing by as violent rioters tore through the streets of Los Angeles, Democrat Mayor Karen Bass abruptly changed course Tuesday evening—finally calling for a curfew in the heart of downtown. The decision came after widespread looting, vandalism, and total lawlessness overwhelmed the city, but instead of accepting responsibility, Bass once again turned her aim toward President Donald Trump.
The last-minute curfew, announced just before 6 p.m. Pacific Time and set to begin at 8 p.m., gave Angelenos barely two hours’ notice to clear out or face arrest. It’s in effect through 6 a.m. Wednesday. While homeless individuals, essential workers, the media, and residents of the area are exempt, the rest of the city was warned in no uncertain terms: steer clear or get cuffed.
Mayor Bass made the announcement during a press briefing, doubling down later on social media where she outrageously blamed President Trump for the chaos—not the rioters she refused to crack down on for four straight nights. “I issued a curfew starting tonight at 8pm for Downtown Los Angeles to stop bad actors who are taking advantage of the President’s chaotic escalation. If you do not live or work in Downtown L.A., avoid the area. Law enforcement will arrest individuals who break the curfew, and you will be prosecuted,” she posted.
Bass’s comments completely ignored her own failure to act sooner. Only after the city had been brought to its knees did she step in—and even then, she used the moment to take another cheap shot at the Trump administration.
