In a rare moment of bipartisan clarity, a senior Democrat with deep ties to South Florida’s Venezuelan community openly praised President Donald Trump following the dramatic capture of Venezuela’s longtime socialist ruler Nicolás Maduro.

Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Florida Democrat whose district includes a large population of Venezuelan exiles, broke with much of her party on Saturday and acknowledged what many have quietly admitted. Maduro’s removal is a long overdue turning point for a nation crushed under decades of authoritarian socialism.

“The capture of the brutal, illegitimate ruler of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, who oppressed Venezuela’s people is welcome news for my friends and neighbors who fled his violent, lawless, and disastrous rule,” Wasserman Schultz wrote on X Saturday morning.
Her remarks stood out immediately, especially given her history as former chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2011 to 2016. While she expressed concern that Congress had not been notified in advance, she did not deny the moral or strategic importance of removing Maduro from power.
