Elon Musk’s aggressive push to streamline the bloated federal government just notched a key legal win. A federal judge has ruled in favor of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), dealing a blow to a liberal group attempting to halt the agency’s investigation into student loan data.
The University of California Student Association (UCSA) had sued to prevent Musk’s DOGE from obtaining access to records on federal student loans, claiming it would cause “irreparable harm.” But on Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss dismissed their arguments, allowing DOGE to move forward.

Judge Moss, an Obama appointee, determined that UCSA had failed to prove its case.
“Because the Court concludes that UCSA has failed to clear that essential hurdle, the Court’s analysis also ends there,” Moss ruled. He also signaled that the lawsuit itself lacked clarity, adding, “The Court leaves for another day consideration of whether UCSA’s has standing to sue and has stated a claim upon which relief may be granted. Those questions are less clear cut and are better answered on a more complete record.”
