New York has quietly returned nearly 7,000 criminal illegal migrants to the streets without alerting federal authorities since President Donald Trump took office, a shocking “revolving door” of offenders that includes murderers, sexual predators, and violent repeat criminals, the Department of Homeland Security revealed last week.
The DHS report attributes the mass releases to state and local sanctuary policies that prevent law enforcement from coordinating with immigration officials—even when ICE has issued criminal detainers. The agency directly accused New York Attorney General Letitia James of shielding dangerous offenders and demanded she turn them over.
“Virtually all Americans agree that people like this should be swiftly removed from the United States when they leave New York’s custody and not be returned to our streets to wreak havoc on law-abiding citizens,” acting ICE Director Todd Lyons wrote in a letter to James.
DHS data shows the released migrants’ criminal histories are staggering, including 29 homicides and thousands of felonies such as drug trafficking, armed robbery, burglary, weapons charges, and sexual crimes. Some were later apprehended by ICE after local authorities refused cooperation.
