Platner Issues a Hasty Apology
Facing intense backlash, Platner released a video statement Friday, trying to distance himself from his own words.
“As you’ve probably seen, there’s a story that’s broken about comments I made on Reddit in an earlier part of my life. As I read through them, I read things that I absolutely do not agree with, I read through and I see things that, words and statements that I abhor. I also see the trajectory of my life,” he said.
Platner went on to frame the comments as the product of a difficult time following his military service, claiming he was struggling emotionally. “The infantry was a very male-dominated place. It’s a very masculine world. When I was in, women weren’t allowed in the infantry. It’s changed now, and that’s a good thing,” he said. “But when I got out, I still had the crude humor, the dark feelings, the offensive language that really was a hallmark of the infantry when I was in it. I made comments that I’m not happy about, that I do not agree with, but they came from a time and place in my life.”
However, critics quickly noted that several of the controversial posts were made as recently as 2018 — years after his military service — raising doubts about his explanation.
Campaign in Crisis
Platner’s apology has done little to calm the storm. Within hours of his statement, his campaign’s political director, Genevieve McDonald, announced her resignation, citing the disturbing revelations. “These statements were not known to me when I agreed to join the campaign, and they are not words or values I can stand behind in a candidate for the United States Senate,” McDonald said.
The scandal has erupted at a time when Democrats are already reeling from multiple controversies involving violent rhetoric from their own ranks. In Virginia, Democrat attorney general candidate Jay Jones was caught sending text messages in which he fantasized about shooting Republican leaders and their families — remarks that have upended the race.
GOP Fires Back
The National Republican Senatorial Committee wasted no time hammering Platner, accusing him of harboring dangerous, anti-American beliefs.
“Graham Platner is a communist who supports violence against Republicans to promote his radical agenda. These posts are not just him messing around on the internet as he is trying to claim, they paint a very dark picture of a candidate not fit for office,” said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell.
Fallout in Maine Politics
Platner’s implosion also complicates Democratic efforts to hold onto competitiveness in Maine. Just days before the revelations, term-limited Governor Janet Mills announced her own Senate bid — one backed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who reportedly sees her as the party’s best chance to unseat Collins, the last Republican senator representing a state won by Kamala Harris in 2024.
With Platner now politically radioactive and another Democratic candidate entering the fray, Maine’s Senate race has quickly turned into a nightmare scenario for the left — and an opportunity for conservatives to remind voters what the modern Democratic Party truly stands for.
