Kelly Ripa Reveals The Habit That Led To Surgery!

“I brush my teeth too much,” she said. “It’s a good-bad habit. But I’ve caused gum recession down here specifically, and so they have gotta re-gum my gums.”

The revelation offered a glimpse into a problem Ripa had apparently been aware of for years. According to the television host, doctors had recommended the procedure roughly five years ago. Rather than immediately moving forward, however, she chose to put it off.

That decision eventually became harder to maintain.

Ripa explained that her doctor recently made it clear that continuing to wait was no longer a good option. After years of postponement, the time had come to address the problem rather than continue delaying treatment.

The procedure also meant that Ripa had to temporarily step away from one of the most visible parts of her professional life.

Because speaking was restricted during her recovery, she was unable to participate in several live broadcasts of “Live with Kelly and Mark,” the morning program she co-hosts with her husband, Mark Consuelos.

For someone whose career has revolved around conversation, interviews and live television, the doctor’s instructions created an unusual challenge.

Consuelos discussed his wife’s recovery during the program while speaking with musician Nick Jonas. He explained that the household was doing its best to make sure Ripa followed the instructions she had been given after surgery.

One of the biggest rules was simple: talk as little as possible.

That may sound easy, but Consuelos suggested it was anything but simple for Ripa. Jonas also recognized the irony of asking someone so naturally conversational to remain quiet while her mouth healed.

The recovery became something of a family effort, with Consuelos keeping an eye on his wife’s progress at home. He even recalled an occasion when Ripa asked him to inspect the area where the procedure had been performed.

Consuelos said he wasn’t willing to directly manipulate the surgical site, but he did take a look from a safe distance. His assessment was reassuring: everything appeared to be healing properly.

Still, the recovery was not exactly comfortable.

Consuelos pointed out that Ripa’s experience was particularly notable because she generally doesn’t have much trouble during ordinary dental appointments. He said she has even been known to undergo routine dental work without local anesthetic.

This time, however, the situation was different.

The procedure involved enough discomfort to make the recovery memorable, even for someone who is apparently accustomed to taking dental visits in stride.

Gum recession occurs when the tissue surrounding the teeth pulls back, leaving more of the tooth—or its root—exposed. While aggressive or excessive brushing can contribute to gum irritation and recession, dental professionals also consider other potential factors, including genetics, periodontal disease and individual oral-health conditions.

In some cases, a gum graft or similar surgical treatment can be used to cover exposed areas and restore lost tissue.

Ripa’s comments do not suggest that brushing itself is harmful. Rather, her experience highlights how even a habit generally associated with good health can become problematic when it is done excessively or too aggressively.

Her story also serves as a reminder that more is not always better when it comes to personal care.

For Ripa, a routine she considered a “good-bad habit” eventually became serious enough to require a surgical solution. After putting off the recommended procedure for years, she ultimately had to confront the issue—and temporarily trade the television spotlight for a period of recovery.

Now, as she heals, the outspoken host has another reason to take her doctor’s advice seriously.

And perhaps most importantly, she has learned that even Kelly Ripa needs to know when it’s time to stop talking—and start recovering.
