A Collin County, Texas jury has sentenced Karmelo Anthony to 35 years in prison following his conviction in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf during a 2025 track meet incident that shocked the local community and later drew national attention.
The sentencing came just hours after jurors returned a guilty verdict. According to court reports, the panel reached its decision in under three hours after closing arguments concluded, signaling a relatively swift deliberation in a case that had already gripped public interest.
Anthony, who was 17 years old at the time of the April 2, 2025, incident, was automatically tried as an adult under Texas law due to the severity of the charge. He faced a sentencing range of five to 99 years in prison, or life imprisonment. However, because of his age at the time of the offense, he was not eligible for the death penalty or life without the possibility of parole.
During the punishment phase, the defense called limited testimony, including a brief statement from Anthony’s mother. She appealed to the jury for leniency, describing him as her firstborn son and expressing remorse on his behalf. The prosecution, meanwhile, focused heavily on the emotional and lasting impact the killing had on the victim’s family.
