After California burned through billions on homelessness programs with little to show for it, Bass made comments this week that instantly exploded online and handed critics fresh ammunition in one of the country’s most politically toxic crises.
During a public mayoral forum, Bass defended her administration’s approach to homelessness by focusing on one issue she said many unhoused individuals face: severe dental decay linked to drug abuse.
“How many people that you meet that are unhoused don’t have teeth at all?” Bass said. “They don’t have teeth. Why? Because meth rots your teeth.”
Then came the line that set social media on fire.
“You can’t succeed without teeth,” she continued. “So there needs to be comprehensive healthcare provided to people.”
The backlash intensified when reporters later asked the mayor who exactly should pay for those treatments.
