Vice President Kamala Harris has opted out of attending this year’s Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a highly anticipated charity event long known for bringing political leaders together. Her decision marks a break from a longstanding tradition that has seen presidential candidates attend the event for decades, fostering a sense of unity and offering a chance for candidates to share lighthearted jabs in a humorous setting.
For over 60 years, the Al Smith Dinner, held annually in New York City, has been a fixture for both Republicans and Democrats. It has served as a fundraiser for Catholic Charities while offering political figures a rare opportunity to tone down the partisanship and embrace a lighter, more collegial atmosphere. The event traditionally features speeches filled with self-deprecating humor, aiming to bridge divides during election years.
