Vice President Kamala Harris is facing significant challenges in a key battleground state, despite early expectations that she would maintain a strong lead. After President Joe Biden stepped aside from the 2024 race in mid-July, making Harris the de facto Democratic nominee, many believed the party would see a resurgence not just nationally but also in states like Virginia that were previously thought to be safe. However, recent polls are showing a much tighter race than anticipated, raising concerns for the Democratic ticket.
In 2020, Virginia was a stronghold for Biden, who carried the state with a commanding 10-point lead. This year, however, the dynamics appear to be shifting, with former President Donald Trump closing the gap. A new poll conducted by the Center for Leadership and Media Studies at the University of Mary Washington revealed a razor-thin margin between Harris and Trump. Among 756 likely voters surveyed, Harris holds a narrow 47% to 46% lead over Trump—well within the 3.7 percent margin of error.

The poll further shows that when third-party candidates are factored in, Harris’ lead narrows even more. “Several third-party and independent candidates received a total of four percent support in the poll, while the remaining likely voters said they were undecided,” the release stated. In a head-to-head matchup between just Harris and Trump, Harris edges out a slight lead of 48% to 46%, again within the margin of error.
