A Ceremony Turned Spectacle
Harris’s role in overseeing the certification of the Electoral College results for the 2020 presidential election brought a particularly humiliating moment. Stewart played clips of the event, including a scene where Harris announced Donald Trump’s 312 Electoral College votes, prompting a thunderous applause from Republicans.
“That’s got to sting. She’s like, ‘Um, I can hear you,’” Stewart quipped, driving home the awkwardness of Harris’s position. He compared her experience to attending one’s own funeral, where even the mourners can’t help but celebrate.
“That’s like attending your own funeral, and even the mourners are like, ‘Woo-hoo!’ I can’t imagine anything that would be more uncomfortable than sitting there while the crowd applauds your opponent,” he continued.
The Democrats’ Hypocrisy
Stewart’s commentary also took aim at the Left’s selective outrage over election challenges. While Democrats frequently lambaste Trump supporters for questioning the 2020 election results, Stewart pointed out their own history of contesting elections.
In 2000, 2004, and 2016, Democrats pushed baseless conspiracy theories to challenge the legitimacy of Republican victories, claiming everything from voter suppression to foreign interference. Yet, during the January 6 certification for Trump’s win, not a single Democrat objected—a move likely orchestrated to avoid appearing hypocritical.
Leadership on the Left seemed to understand how damaging such a contradiction would be to their narrative of Trump as a unique threat to democracy. “There is a lot of joy in that room. I think she can still win this thing! She just needs them to find 130,000 votes in Georgia! And then some in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and maybe Wisconsin,” Stewart joked, mocking the absurdity of Harris’s position.
Kamala Harris: A Political Punchline?
As if the Republicans’ applause wasn’t bad enough, Stewart highlighted how Democrats themselves erupted into cheers when Harris read out her losing total of 226 Electoral College votes.
