Just In: DOJ Indicts SPLC on 11 Counts

A political earthquake rocked Washington this week after the Justice Department announced a sweeping federal indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center, accusing the controversial organization of running a years-long scheme that allegedly betrayed donors and secretly financed the very extremism it claimed to fight.

According to the announcement, the Southern Poverty Law Center, often known as the SPLC, was hit with 11 federal counts on Tuesday. Those charges include wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Federal prosecutors say the organization secretly routed more than $3 million to members of white supremacist and extremist groups while continuing to publicly market itself as a leading force against hate and domestic extremism.

The indictment was returned by a grand jury in the Middle District of Alabama, delivering a stunning blow to one of the nation’s most politically connected activist groups.
