President Donald Trump has never been short on critics, and over the years many of them have become familiar figures in America’s political battles. Names like Rosie O’Donnell, Keith Olbermann, and Chuck Schumer have spent years clashing with Trump publicly. But sometimes the most intense political fights happen far away from television cameras.
That appears to be the case with the latest dispute involving the Federal Reserve and a federal judge’s dramatic intervention that has halted a criminal probe targeting Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
The decision has ignited outrage inside the Justice Department while also exposing divisions among Republicans over whether the investigation should have happened at all.
A Federal Judge Steps In
The controversy began after a Republican lawmaker referred Powell to the Department of Justice over allegations that the Federal Reserve chair may have misled Congress about the cost of a government project.
That referral triggered a criminal inquiry and eventually led to subpoenas being issued against Powell.
But the investigation abruptly ran into a wall when U.S. District Judge James Boasberg stepped in and shut the effort down.
