In a controversial decision on Monday, Judge Juan Merchan upheld all 34 felony convictions against former President Donald Trump, dismissing efforts to leverage the Supreme Court’s recent presidential immunity ruling. The move signals a new chapter in the legal battles facing Trump amid ongoing scrutiny of the case.
Trump was convicted in April on 34 felony counts following allegations that he orchestrated hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels—real name Stephanie Clifford—through his former attorney Michael Cohen. The payment, reportedly intended to silence Daniels and prevent the story of an alleged affair from surfacing in the National Enquirer, became a focal point of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s prosecution. Bragg alleged that Trump committed fraud by mislabeling the payment as “legal fees.”

In late June, Judge Merchan indefinitely delayed Trump’s scheduled November 26 sentencing, giving Trump’s legal team time to file multiple motions to dismiss the case. Trump’s lawyers argued that the convictions should be overturned following the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling that U.S. presidents have immunity from prosecution for official acts.
