Another Trump policy is under siege—this time by a federal judge who appears more interested in protecting illegal immigration than upholding the law. On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante stunned conservatives by announcing he will temporarily block President Trump’s latest executive order that aims to end automatic citizenship for children born to illegal aliens.
Despite being appointed by a Republican president, George W. Bush, Judge Laplante aligned himself with radical open-border advocates. He declared that he would issue a preliminary injunction to halt Trump’s directive and restrict enforcement only to specific situations involving children. He even added a seven-day delay to the order, claiming it was for “court efficiency.”
According to The Straits Times, Laplante’s move came swiftly after the ACLU and other leftist legal groups filed a lawsuit pushing for class-action status. They sought to represent an entire class of so-called “anchor babies” whose citizenship would be impacted by Trump’s policy. The judge not only agreed with them—he certified the class and took the rare step of imposing a nationwide injunction, which he claimed was an easy decision.
“That’s irreparable harm, citizenship alone,” Laplante said during his ruling. “It is the greatest privilege that exists in the world.”
