A federal judge appointed by Barack Obama has put the brakes on the Trump administration’s efforts to deport Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student whose green card was revoked following his arrest by ICE. The move by U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman has sparked outrage, as many see it as yet another example of activist judges undermining national security.
The White House had labeled Khalil a “Pro-Hamas Student” due to his radical activism and ties to anti-Israel demonstrations. He was on track to be deported—until Furman’s ruling derailed the process.

On Saturday, Trump’s ICE agents arrested Khalil, a Palestinian-born agitator who has been leading anti-Israel protests at Columbia and Barnard College.
